How Can You Grow?

Maybe this is a wild and utterly rash assumption, but my betting is you’d love your business to grow.

Growth comes in many forms. It may be financial growth where you grow your revenue and profits. Maybe it’s numerical growth where you expand your staff team. Or maybe it’s product growth as you extend the range of products or services that you offer. Generally, growth in one area will lead to expansion in other areas, but that is not always the case. No matter the type, most businesses and organisations want to grow and thrive.

The problem is, of course, that growth is never easy and takes tenacity, a bit of luck and a ton of hard work. True, sustainable, growth takes passion, grit, determination, resources and the willingness to take calculated risks. But how do you go about achieving it?

Recently we’ve hit a brick wall and everything was hard going and incredibly frustrating. Several sizeable organisations we work with have been going through deep change and we have been invited to tender for the rebranding work that followed. In every case, we got down to the last two, and in every case we lost out. And we kept getting the same feedback – we were just too small and it was felt we would not be able to deliver what was required in terms of creativity and volume of work.

And so the question kept arising – how can we grow? What do we need to do to break this cycle? How can we grow if we don’t win the work to drive the growth, but how can we afford to grow so we’re big enough to win the work? It’s a chicken and egg situation.

Then, after weeks of feeling like we were getting nowhere and growth was never going to happen for us, we hit upon something so utterly simple and yet so powerful that it’s transforming everything we think, feel and do. And I want to share it with you.

We asked and answered three very simple questions:What do i do

  1. What does our target audience need that will make a big difference to them?
  2. What can we practically do to make that difference?
  3. What is our message and how do we communicate it?

I’m not going to spoil the webinar with our answers here but, suffice, to say, that within two days of answering these three questions I had met with a recruitment agency and, as I type this, I am sifting through 8 quality job applications.

It’s all come down to one thing – focus. And this is the biggest lesson I’ve learned though this. Focus on what our clients need (not what they want). Focus on how we can meet that need – doing what we’re really good at that will make a difference. And focus on our message to our audience. Be absolutely clear on what we’re saying and how we’re saying it.

Are you focused? Have you got that clarity? If you’re in a similar situation to me and find yourself frustrated then why not take some time out to answer those three questions. You never know what lies around the corner.
