Each month we catch up with one of our clients – knowing that they’ll undoubtedly have some useful insights we can share with you. This month we spoke to Paul Sweeney, one of the founders of Black Pear Electrical who explains how a mindset shift set them on a better path.


The Company


Black Pear Electrical is an electrical contracting team, specialising in working with hotels and the retail sector. They work with major chains and small independents – as well as looking after domestic customers.


Based in Droitwich, Worcestershire – and working across the country – their services include electrical inspection and testing, new electrical installations, electrical refurbishment, lighting and LED lights.



The Challenge


The two directors, Paul Sweeney and Rob Harkin are very hands-on in the business. Back in 2017 when they started working with BizSmart, they had an idea of where they wanted to take the business, but no clear plan or route to get there.


As Paul puts it, “We had lots of ideas but no real focus”. They were keen to specialise more on the compliance side of the business, but this would be a slight change of direction, needing a new website and a different approach to marketing. There was a big gap between where they were and where they wanted to get to.



The Solution


Joining the Worcestershire Growth Programme and getting access to a BizSmart core advisor gave Black Pear Electrical the resources they needed to get some clarity. Getting a full business plan down on paper meant they could see what they needed to do next.


Paul explains, “It helped us get a bit more structure in place and apply some logic to what we were doing with our marketing.”


With the help of a Worcestershire Business Accelerator grant of £5,602, covering 45% of their costs, they were able to completely redo their website, have an explainer video made, implement a CRM system and add in more marketing activities to promote their business.



The Future


Paul and Rob will continue expanding the compliance side of the business, undertaking work that includes testing fire alarms and emergency lighting.


They are recruiting to grow their team on the specialist testing side, and they’re also developing a new product to complement the compliance testing work they already do.



The Last Word


Talking about the difference BizSmart has made to his business, Paul said, “The main difference is that I’m working on the business rather than in the business. I still do some delivery, but it’s changed our mindset, and we’re on a road to expansion. I would highly recommend working with BizSmart. In fact, I have recommended them already!”
