Increasing productivity by focusing on good health

Increasing productivity in a business can be challenging, but Worcestershire business owners have access to a project that can make a real difference to people in the workplace.

Worcestershire County Council’s Worcestershire Works Well project was put in place to boost health in the region, with the knock on effect that this leads to happy health staff and therefore increased productivity.

Worcestershire has an aging population, so this scheme provides the added bonus that by improving the health of the working population in the 40-64 age bracket, people have a greater chance of enjoying good health in their retirement.

We all know that things like eating healthily, exercising and getting enough sleep will give us more energy, but it’s often a challenge to make changes and make a difference to our health.

Increasing productivity by focusing on good health

Worcestershire Works Well is focused on a number of key areas:

  • Smoking and tobacco control
  • Mental health
  • Physical activity
  • Healthy eating
  • Leadership
  • Health and safety
  • Attendance management
  • Alcohol and substance misuse.

Access to the scheme is free of charge for Worcestershire businesses and over the last five years the project has positively impacted on more than 75 businesses and 25,000 employees in the county. This means that ten per cent of the workforce has now enjoyed the benefits of this project.

By focusing on staff wellbeing, the programme has helped businesses to:

  • Increase productivity
  • Reduce rates of staff sickness
  • Improve staff loyalty
  • Reduce staff turnover
  • Reduce recruitment costs.

Businesses that sign up to the scheme not only benefit from increased productivity in their workforce but from the knowledge that they are making a difference in the lives of their staff. As people become happier and healthier, they get ill less often and are able to perform better in every aspect of their lives, not just in the workplace.

Worcestershire Works Well is free to access and often starts with a health MOT and survey to assess starting points and see where specific help is needed. This is what happened at DHL in Droitwich, and since staff have been supported to make healthier life choices, the company has saved more than £37,000 as a result of reduced staff sickness and absence.
